Can DeX replace your PC?

Today’s smartphones offer enough computing power to complete most work tasks, but the limitations of smaller screens can make it difficult to multitask or do heavier productivity work. Using Samsung DeX with a full-size monitor, keyboard and mouse makes it possible to ditch the laptop or desktop PC for good.

For individuals, DeX is a great way to work more flexibly. Instead of booting up your laptop to catch up on work at home, just connect your phone to a monitor and get straight to work. You can run up to five apps at once and easily get most tasks done without hassle.

Even businesses that are reliant on legacy Windows applications that don’t have mobile or web versions should consider DeX as an option. You can leverage a virtual desktop app like VMware, Citrix or Amazon WorkSpaces within DeX to access a full Windows desktop.

History

Dex V2 came with a major rewrite of its API using gRPC and Protobuf.
Consumers of this new API generally followed one of two paths in their applications:

Many users imported the package directly.
While this worked quite well for most of the time,
it introduced a dependency between consuming projects and the main Dex module itself (with all of its own dependencies).
Sometimes this caused conflicts with other dependencies of the project (aka. dependency hell).
Using Dex this way also forced us to remain backward compatible in a bunch of other areas.

To solve the dependency problem, many consumers decided to download the single proto file from the repository
and generate client stubs themselves. This turned out to be a great alternative to importing the whole Dex project
(just to use its generated API package).

Setting up Samsung DeX

Samsung DeX station/pad

To switch into Samsung DeX using the station or pad, follow these steps:

1. Connect the DeX Station to an external monitor using a HDMI cable.
2. Connect the DeX Station to a power source using a Samsung branded fast charger (fast chargers have a lighting bolt symbol on them).
3. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the mobile device through Bluetooth. Alternatively, connect the mouse and keyboard via USB.
4. Place the mobile device on the DeX Station.

Samsung DeX HDMI adaptor

To switch into Samsung DeX using a HDMI adapter, follow these steps:

1. Connect a Samsung Note 9 or Tab 4 to an external monitor using a HDMI to USB Type-C cable.
2. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the mobile device through Bluetooth. Alternatively, connect the mouse and keyboard via USB dongle.

Tips for getting started with Samsung DeX

Adjusting your display settings: When you first boot up DeX, you’ll be prompted to check that the desktop is correctly displaying on your monitor or TV. If the corners of the DeX desktop do not fit properly within the display, you’ll need to go into the settings menu of your monitor or TV to adjust the scaling. This is particularly common on TVs where the picture may be set to a certain aspect ratio. Select the “fit to screen” option and you should be all set.

Screen mirroring versus DeX mode: In your phone’s notifications menu, you’ll see several new options after connecting to your monitor, including the choice to move between screen mirroring and DeX mode. As its name indicates, screen mirroring will simply mirror what’s on your phone screen to the monitor. Screen mirroring is useful in some circumstances, but DeX gives you a much different, completely optimized desktop computing experience for productivity work on a larger screen. Tap the notification to go into DeX mode.

Use your phone as a touchpad: Also in the notifications menu on your phone, you’ll see the option to use your phone as a touchpad. After selecting this, you’ll be able to use your finger or an S Pen to navigate within DeX. This is great if you don’t have a mouse handy and want to open an app, PowerPoint or video, especially if you’re using DeX in a presentation setting. When using DeX on a tablet, you can also use your screen as a graphics pad to sketch and draw.

Launch and maximize your mobile apps: All of Samsung’s core applications are optimized for DeX, meaning you can resize and maximize the apps. You can also use right-click functionality and keyboard shortcuts. There are dozens of third-party apps that are fully optimized for DeX, including the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Photoshop Lightroom, Photoshop Sketch, Gmail, Chrome, BlueJeans, GoToMeeting and all the leading VDI clients, to name just a few. For those that aren’t optimized for DeX, read on for the next tip.

Activate DeX Labs: DeX Labs offers access to “experimental” features that aren’t officially supported. Two current features include allowing DeX to force apps to resize and auto-open the last used app. To activate, click the DeX logo on the bottom right of your screen, open DeX Labs and toggle the features on. Now, when you open an app that is not DeX optimized, you’ll be given the opportunity to force resizing. This will allow you to view it in a larger window or even in fully maximized view.

What is Samsung DeX and what devices does it run on?

Samsung DeX is not hardware — it’s a software platform that extends your smartphone or tablet into a desktop computing experience. It runs on all of Samsung’s flagship smartphones introduced since 2017, including the Galaxy S8/S8+, Note8, S9/S9+, Note9, S10e/S10/S10+, Note10/10+, S20/S20+/S20 Ultra , Note20/Note20 Ultra, and the Galaxy Fold. Once connected to a monitor via one of these adapters, the Samsung DeX platform boots up quickly on the monitor, presenting the user with a familiar desktop experience complete with resizable windows, drag-and-drop functionality and keyboard shortcuts.

In August 2019, Samsung introduced DeX for PC. This enables users to connect their mobile device to a compatible Windows PC or Mac to access DeX right from their computer.

1. What SDK does my app need to target to run in Samsung DeX?

Ideally, you should be targeting SDK 24 and above. Apps targeting version 23 and below can still run in Desktop Mode, however, some features may not work correctly.

If you are not targeting SDK 24 and above, users will receive this message when opening the app in Samsung DeX: «Some functions of this app may not be supported in Samsung DeX.”

2. What are the minimum requirements my app must meet to open in Samsung DeX?

Unless apps declare that multi-touch or touchscreen are required, they will run in Samsung DeX.

To run your app in Desktop mode – which features a resizable window – you must follow these key requirements:

1. Support Multi Density for xxxhdpi (640 dpi) and mdpi (160 dpi).
2. Support Mouse or trackpad interaction.
3. Support Android N Multi-Window and explicitly declare android:resizableActivity=”true” in the Manifest.

4. Why can’t my app be re-sized in Samsung DeX like other apps?

When an app is launched in Samsung DeX, it adopts 1 of 2 different window types:

1. Desktop mode: Apps that comply with Android N Multi-Window Standards. They operate in Free-Form Multi-Window Mode and can be re-sized accordingly.
2. Fixed-size Window Mode: Apps that do not comply with Android N Multi-Window standards. They operate only in a fixed mobile dimension and cannot be re-sized.

5.My Bluetooth mouse and keyboard are not working in Samsung DeX, why?

If an app is having issues working with a mouse and keyboard in Samsung DeX, check to make sure they are not explicitly disabled. Ensure these 2 statements are not declared in the Manifest:

This message appears when an app doesn’t support Multi-Window Mode. Multi-window is a feature supported by devices with Android 7.0 Nougat or later. It allows the user to freely resize the app screen. Ensure that you are targeting SDK version 24 and have declared the following in your manifest:

These layout issues may occur if you have not modified your code appropriately to handle the density display changes required to run apps in Samsung DeX. For example, you may need to provision separate images in both xxhdpi & mdpi for your app in order for it to display properly.

For more information on density changes, see Androids guide on run time changes.

This can occur if your app custom UI framework does not handle the density change from xxhdpi to mdpi properly. Try checking the onConfigurationChanged() method. Sometimes the .newConfig parameter can hold the old density value. For instance, when switching from DeX Mode to Mobile Mode, the density value in the newConfig parameter sometimes still reports 160 dpi.

11. An error occurred while using Samsung DeX, what should I do?

Please report errors that occur while using Samsung DeX. By letting us know the issues that need to be fixed, you are directly contributing to how our service improves with future updates.
How to report issues:

1. While using Samsung DeX, open Settings.
2. Select the button with three vertical dots (︙More) on the upper right corner.
3. Select: Ask Questions > Error reports
4. Describe the error you encountered then select the «send system log data» check box.
5. Select Report.

What displays work with DeX?

Wired DeX can work on just about any monitor or TV with an HDMI port, however, the supported resolutions and aspect ratios differ depending on the mobile device and adapter used. After connecting to the monitor or TV, open your Settings and click into the DeX menu. There you will see the display resolutions supported for your setup. You may also need to adjust the settings on your monitor or TV to ensure content doesn’t overlap the edges of your screen, as noted in the above.

For wireless DeX, most Smart TVs with Miracast will work, but Samsung Smart TVs released from 2019 onwards provide the best experience.

Dedicated API package

We spent some time with experimenting, trying to find the best possible option.
We wanted to find a solution that’s backward compatible, but also fits into our future plans with Dex.

After a few iterations, we ended up creating a new package under the original API package, called and we made it a separate Go module.
This allows us to keep the API close to the main project and lets consumers import the API without the rest of Dex’s dependencies.

The first tag of this package is and we intend to keep versioning this package, separately from the main Dex project.
When adding new features to the API, we will tag new minor versions. Breaking changes will result in a new major version of the API,
which may also result in a major Dex version, but that’s still in the future.

Thanks to protobuf’s backward compatibility (and our BC promise for the API),
you should be able to talk to Dex with older API versions (compared to the one compiled into Dex itself),
but we recommend using the same version. Although the proto itself should be backward compatible,
the API package depends on gRPC, which is (unfortunately) known to break things between different versions
(thanks to the relatively large shared library).

What benefits can DeX bring my company?

Having one piece of tech that connects everything brings a wide range of benefits for both the employee and the business.

Usage

Although Dex remains backward compatible and continues to provide the API under the original location,
we highly recommend replacing it with the new location in your project (if you use the official API package):

How to set up your workstation for Samsung DeX

Once you have your preferred adapter or cable, follow these steps to connect your Galaxy smartphone to your monitor and start using DeX:

1. If you’re using the DeX cable, plug it in to your monitor’s HDMI port. Those using the HDMI or multiport adapter can just connect a standard HDMI cable from their monitor into the adapter.

2. Connect your smartphone to the adapter by way of your phone’s USB-C port. You should see the Samsung DeX logo appear on your monitor as it quickly boots up.

3. Connect or pair your keyboard and mouse. If you’re using the DeX cable or HDMI adapter, you’ll be pairing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. On your phone, turn on Bluetooth and scan for your peripherals; then follow the manufacturer’s instructions (which often involve holding down a Bluetooth button to make the keyboard or mouse “visible” to your phone). If you have the multiport adapter, you have the option of connecting via USB 3.0. You can also choose to use your phone as a touchpad instead of connecting a mouse; see more on that .

3. If you are using the multiport adapter, you can also connect your phone’s charging cable to the adapter’s USB-C port and your Ethernet cable to the internet jack. Those using the DeX cable or HDMI adapter can keep their phone charged by placing it on a wireless charger while using DeX.

• Google Chrome, Gmail, YouTube и другие приложения Google.
• Медиаплееры VLC, MX Player.
• AutoCAD Mobile

Это далеко не полный список: при подключении, если на рабочем столе Samsung DeX зайти в список приложений, там вы увидите ссылку на магазин, с котором собраны программы, поддерживающие технологию, и сможете выбрать то, что вам по вкусу.

Также, если в настройках телефона в разделе Дополнительные функции — Игры включить функцию Game Launcher, то большинство игр будут работать в полноэкранном режиме, правда управление в них может оказаться не слишком удобным, если они не поддерживают клавиатуру.

Если при работе вам придет смс, сообщение в мессенджере или звонок, ответить, естественно, можно прямо с «рабочего стола». Стандартно будет использоваться микрофон лежащего рядом телефона, а для вывода звука — монитор или динамик смартфона.

В целом, каких-то особых сложностей при использовании телефона в качестве компьютера вы не должны заметить: всё реализовано очень просто, а приложения вам уже знакомы.

На что стоит обратить внимание:

1. В приложении «Настройки» появится пункт Samsung Dex. Загляните в него, возможно найдете что-то интересное. Например, там есть экспериментальная функция для запуска любых, даже неподдерживаемых приложений в полноэкранном режиме (у меня не сработало). 
2. Изучите горячие клавиши, например, переключение языка — Shift+Пробел. Ниже — скриншот, под клавишей Meta подразумевается клавиша Windows или Command (если используется клавиатура Apple). Системные клавиши наподобие Print Screen работают. 
3. Некоторые приложения при подключении к DeX могут предлагать дополнительные функции. Например, Adobe Sketch имеет функцию Dual Canvas, когда экран смартфона используется как графический планшет, рисуем на нем пером, а увеличенное изображение видим на мониторе.
4. Как я уже упоминал, экран смартфона может использоваться в качестве тачпада (включить режим можно в области уведомлений на самом смартфоне, когда он подключен к DeX). Долго разбирался, как перетаскивать окна в таком режиме, так что сразу сообщу: двумя пальцами.
5. Поддерживается подключение флэшек, даже NTFS (внешние диски не пробовал), заработал даже внешний USB микрофон. Возможно, имеет смысл поэкспериментировать и с другими USB-устройствами.
6. В первый раз потребовалось добавить раскладку клавиатуры в настройках аппаратной клавиатуры, чтобы была возможность ввода на двух языка.

Using DeX with your PC

The classic, original version of DeX is all about powering a desktop experience without your PC. However, the new DeX for PC application — available on the Note10, S20 and Note20 series — now lets you use DeX with your laptop.

To use DeX for PC, no additional adapter is required as you’ll simply use your smartphone’s USB-C charging cable to connect to your PC. You will, however, need to first install the DeX for PC application on your compatible Windows or Mac laptop. Once you’ve installed the app and connected your phone, DeX will boot automatically. You can view DeX for PC in full screen mode or as a floating window alongside your laptop applications.

While the classic DeX is great for users who want to ditch their laptop and use just their phone, DeX for PC is about bringing together both devices on a single screen. While working on your laptop, you’ll be able to quickly access all your mobile notifications and messages, and even take calls. You can also transfer files and photos to and from your phone with an easy drag and drop.

Из вышеизложенного напрашивается вывод, что бренд Самсунг, заботясь о своих постоянных клиентах, создает различные дополнительные устройства, которые помогают сделать жизнь еще проще. А что касается недостатков, которые также присутствуют, то стоит отметить следующие нюансы.

1. Samsung DeX подходит только для телефонов версии S8 и выше. Учитывая ценовую категорию этой продукции, DeX будет доступна далеко не всем поклонникам Самсунгов.
2. Ограниченные возможности процессора смартфона не позволяют полноценно заменить ПК. Например, при использовании Galaxy S8 видео и анимация, хоть и не тормозят, но не отличаются плавностью переходов, учитывая быстродействие процессора и 4 Гб оперативной памяти.
3. Под док-станцию пока адаптировано относительно небольшое количество приложений, остальные или не масштабируются, или не устанавливаются.
4. В гаджете отсутствуют внешние динамики, и не всегда хватает 2 выходов USB для подключения всех необходимых устройств.

Using DeX wirelessly on your smart TV

With the new Note20 line, you can use DeX wirelessly on most Smart TVs featuring Miracast. The experience works best on Samsung Smart TVs released in 2019 or after.

Более того, можно использовать приложение Sentio Desktop для реализации таких функций на смартфонах вне зависимости от производителя (но с Android 7 и более новой, с возможностью подключения периферии). Быть может, за чем-то подобным будущее, а может и нет.

Пока ни один из вариантов не «выстрелил», но, субъективно, для некоторых пользователей и сценариев использования Samsung DeX и аналоги могут быть отличным вариантом: по сути, весьма хорошо защищенный компьютер со всеми важными данными всегда в кармане, подходящий для многих рабочих задач (если мы не говорим о профессиональном использовании) и почти для любых «сидеть в интернете», «постить фото и видео», «смотреть фильмы».

Лично для себя я вполне допускаю, что мог бы ограничиться смартфоном Samsung в связке с DeX Pad, если бы не сфера деятельности, а также некоторые привычки, выработавшиеся за 10-15 лет использования одних и тех же программ: для всех тех вещей, которые я делаю за компьютером вне профессиональной деятельности, мне бы этого более чем хватило. Конечно, не стоит забывать о том, что цена совместимых смартфонов не малая, но, очень многие покупают их и так, даже не зная о возможности расширения функциональности.

Это устройство полноценно не заменит ноутбук и уж тем более ПК, но оно является приятным бонусом для владельцев Galaxy  8 и 9, так как повышает уровень использования смартфонов, расширяя их возможности и функции.
